A terrifying mid-air struggle aboard a flydubai flight turned a routine journey from Dubai to Tel Aviv into a fight for survival after the co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain inside the cockpit.

According to reports and passenger accounts, the Omani co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain, described as an Indian-origin UAE citizen, with a pocket knife. The captain was reportedly seriously injured and bleeding during the struggle.

One crucial detail may have made all the difference: the cockpit door was reportedly slightly open. It is possible the captain, sensing the danger, had kept the door open so that assistance could reach him if needed.

That decision may have allowed three Israeli passengers sitting nearby to rush into the cockpit after hearing the struggle. They reportedly confronted and subdued the co-pilot, preventing the situation from escalating further.

At almost the same time, the aircraft entered a terrifying steep dive and spin. Passengers described moments of extreme fear as the aircraft appeared to plunge rapidly toward the ground.

Fortunately, two off-duty pilots were travelling as passengers on the flight. After the captain was incapacitated, they reportedly entered the cockpit and took control of the aircraft, helping stabilize the plane.

Meanwhile, other passengers helped the injured captain and assisted in restraining the alleged attacker.

Passenger Daniel described the terrifying moments, saying he heard a struggle coming from the cockpit, saw blood on the floor and initially believed the aircraft was being hijacked.

“It felt like, that’s it. It’s over. September 11 is happening again,” he recalled.

The aircraft eventually stabilized and diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said initial evidence indicated that the pilot who attacked his fellow pilot appeared to have intended to crash the aircraft. Israeli officials praised the passengers and crew members who intervened and helped prevent what could have become a major tragedy.

The incident remains under investigation, including the circumstances of the cockpit attack, the aircraft’s rapid descent and reported damage to its tail.

For those onboard, the combination of a cockpit attack, an injured captain, a plunging aircraft and passengers suddenly having to help operate and secure the plane created an extraordinary aviation emergency — one in which the actions of several people may have played a critical role in getting the aircraft safely onto the ground.
