A Delta Air Lines flight from Barcelona to Boston was forced to make an emergency landing in Porto, Portugal, after smoke filled the cabin during the flight.
Delta Flight DL251, operated by an Airbus A330, departed Barcelona at around 3:15 p.m. Sunday carrying 296 people. About 2½ hours into the planned 8½-hour journey, the aircraft diverted to Porto after a reported mechanical issue and smoke in the cabin.
Local reports said 12 people required oxygen while eight were treated on the airport tarmac. Four people — three passengers and one crew member — were taken to hospital. Two passengers were reportedly treated for mild respiratory symptoms linked to smoke inhalation and were in stable condition.
The aircraft had reached approximately 32,000 feet before diverting, eventually landing safely at Porto’s Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport.
The incident disrupted onward travel, with a Boston-bound flight from Porto reportedly canceled Monday. Delta was scheduled to operate another Barcelona–Boston flight later Monday.
The cause of the smoke and mechanical problem remains under investigation.
