Five people have been killed and five others injured after an Amazon cargo plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, striking two vehicles and bursting into flames.
The victims who lost their lives were all occupants of the vehicles hit by the aircraft, according to NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy.
The victims were identified as:
• Rolando Aleman Leon, 55
• Yoel Rodriguez Naranjo, 53
• Julio C. Pineda, 75
• Carlos Acosta Fajardo, 53
• Javierkys Reyes Quevedo, 47
The aircraft, Amazon Air Flight 7598, was a Boeing 767-33A operated by 21 Air LLC. It had flown from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and was returning to Miami when it overran Runway 30 during landing.
The Boeing 767 struck airport navigational equipment before crashing through a perimeter fence and hitting a 2012 Ford Econoline van. Seven people were inside the van.
The aircraft then crossed the airport boundary and struck a Toyota Corolla Cross traveling on Northwest 67th Avenue before continuing roughly 1,300 feet beyond the paved runway area and hitting another fence.
Five people were injured in the crash, including pilots Joseph Carroll, 55, and Jaime Felipe Silva Molina, 37. Both pilots were treated at a Miami hospital and released.
As of Tuesday, three injured people remained hospitalized, with two reportedly in critical condition.
The National Transportation Safety Board has begun investigating the crash, including what happened during the landing and why the aircraft was unable to stop before overrunning the runway.
The investigation will seek to determine exactly how the Boeing 767 ended up leaving the runway and striking vehicles near one of the country’s busiest airports.
