A Delta Air Lines aircraft reportedly made contact with a firework while on final approach to Chicago Midway International Airport during Independence Day celebrations on July 4.

According to air traffic control (ATC) audio, the crew of Delta Flight 1076, an Airbus A319 operating from Atlanta (ATL) to Chicago Midway (MDW), reported hearing a “loud bang” while descending approximately 200–250 feet above the ground.

Moments earlier, air traffic controllers had warned the flight crew that multiple homes near the approach path were launching fireworks, advising them to exercise caution as the aircraft lined up for landing.

The aircraft landed safely without declaring an emergency and taxied normally to the gate. Controllers later informed the pilots that there had been several reports of fireworks being launched dangerously close to the runway and that local authorities had been notified.

Delta Air Lines confirmed that Flight 1076 reportedly made contact with a firework during descent. Although no passengers or crew members were injured, the Airbus A319 was removed from service for a comprehensive inspection before returning to operation.

The incident highlights the serious risks posed by fireworks near airports. Even small pyrotechnics can become a significant hazard to aircraft during the most critical phases of flight—takeoff and landing.
