If you’re flying through Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) today, expect major disruptions as the airport temporarily suspends all inbound and outbound flights for America’s 250th Independence Day celebrations.
Beginning at 12:00 PM on July 4, DCA’s airspace will close to commercial airline traffic to accommodate an extraordinary lineup of military flyovers, aerial demonstrations, and one of the largest Independence Day fireworks displays ever held over Washington, D.C. The airport will operate with reduced terminal capacity throughout the afternoon, with normal flight operations expected to resume after midnight on July 5.
The skies above the National Mall will remain exceptionally busy, with nearly continuous aerial performances scheduled from 1:14 PM to 8:22 PM. Practice flyovers were already conducted on July 3, giving aviation enthusiasts a preview of the massive aerial spectacle.
Passengers traveling through DCA are strongly advised to check their flight status with their airline before heading to the airport, as delays, cancellations, and schedule changes are expected throughout the day.
Meanwhile, Washington, D.C. is also battling dangerous heat, with temperatures forecast to reach 102°F (39°C) and heat index values climbing as high as 113°F (45°C). Several Independence Day events have already been delayed or canceled due to the extreme weather, with dozens of people requiring medical attention for heat-related illnesses.
If you’re traveling today, plan ahead, stay hydrated, and allow extra time for your journey.
