Mexican Man Pleads Guilty After Attempting to Stab Passenger on Las Vegas-Bound Flight in Shocking Mid-Air Attack

A terrifying mid-air assault that unfolded aboard a Seattle-to-Las Vegas flight has reached a major legal milestone more than two years later.

On Jan. 24, 2024, Julio Alvarez Lopez, a Mexican national and lawful permanent resident of the United States since 2018, allegedly launched a brutal and unprovoked attack on a fellow passenger aboard a commercial flight bound for Las Vegas. On Thursday, Lopez pleaded guilty to one count of assault with a dangerous weapon, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

The incident occurred approximately 30 minutes before the aircraft was scheduled to land at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas. According to federal prosecutors, Lopez had secretly fashioned a makeshift weapon before boarding the flight by bundling three pens together with hairbands.

Investigators say Lopez left his seat, visited the aircraft lavatory, and upon returning, suddenly attacked a passenger seated across the aisle. Witnesses described a horrifying scene as Lopez repeatedly punched, struck, and attempted to stab the victim in the face and eye area.

Passengers reported that blood covered parts of the cabin while the victim’s wife desperately tried to protect her husband. She was also struck during the struggle while shielding their 7-year-old son from the violent attack.

After assaulting the passenger, Lopez reportedly walked toward the front of the aircraft, repeatedly shouting, “I’ll only talk to the FBI.”

Fortunately, an off-duty law enforcement officer who was onboard immediately intervened, ordering Lopez to sit down. Flight attendants provided flex cuffs, and several passengers worked together to restrain him until the aircraft landed safely in Las Vegas, where officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department took him into custody.

During an FBI interview, Lopez waived his Miranda rights and admitted he had planned the attack before boarding the aircraft. He told investigators he believed the victim was following him and claimed the passenger was associated with a drug cartel. Authorities later confirmed Lopez admitted he had never met the victim before the flight.

According to court documents, Lopez confessed that he intended to kill the passenger by stabbing him through the eye in an attempt to reach his brain.

The victim survived the attack but suffered multiple injuries, including wounds around the eye that required stitches.

Witnesses also told investigators that Lopez had displayed unusual behavior before the attack. They observed him repeatedly putting gloves on and taking them off, frequently opening his backpack, avoiding eye contact, and appearing nervous throughout the flight.

Investigators further revealed Lopez claimed he had been seeking asylum in the United States and believed the mafia had been pursuing him for several months.

Lopez is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 22. The case serves as another reminder of the unpredictable security challenges faced by airline crews and passengers, and highlights how the quick actions of fellow travelers, flight attendants, and an onboard law enforcement officer likely prevented an even greater tragedy.
