A viral airport incident involving Lufthansa has sparked a global debate about airline dress codes after German fitness influencer Edda Elisa Pilz claimed she was prevented from boarding a flight until she covered up her athletic clothing.
The incident reportedly occurred during the recent European heatwave, with temperatures reaching around 30°C (86°F), as Pilz was preparing to board a Lufthansa flight from Berlin, Germany, to Austria.
According to the 24-year-old influencer, who has more than 500,000 followers on both Instagram and TikTok, she was wearing a matching sports bra and athletic shorts when a Lufthansa gate agent stopped her while scanning boarding passes.
Pilz said the employee told her, “You cannot board like that,” and allegedly described her as being “naked.” She insisted that she was wearing proper sportswear and questioned why her outfit was considered inappropriate.
She claims the airline employee instructed her to step aside and told her she could only board after putting on additional clothing. After putting on a jacket, Pilz said she was then instructed to zip it completely before she was finally allowed to board the aircraft.
According to Pilz, the employee also blamed her for delaying the boarding process, allegedly saying that the entire flight was being held up because of her. Pilz responded that she was simply asking for an explanation because she had never heard of Lufthansa enforcing a passenger dress code.
The influencer also questioned why male passengers wearing shorts were allowed to board without issue, saying the incident appeared inconsistent. She emphasized that her biggest concern was not whether Lufthansa has clothing rules, but what she described as the employee’s disrespectful attitude.
Pilz later shared her experience in a TikTok video from the airport, directly asking Lufthansa whether the airline supports the way she said she was treated. The video quickly went viral, generating millions of views and igniting discussions worldwide about passenger rights, customer service, gender equality, and whether airlines should have clearly defined dress codes.
Lufthansa’s published General Conditions of Carriage do not contain a specific passenger dress code. The airline does reserve the right to refuse transportation in situations involving safety, security, health, or operational concerns, but athletic clothing is not specifically addressed. At the time of writing, Lufthansa has not publicly responded to Pilz’s allegations.
