A United Airlines aircraft that landed at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) on Saturday declared a state of emergency after a passenger reportedly attacked one of the fight attendants aboard.

The pilots operating United Airlines flight 1837 could be heard requesting police assistance over the radio to air traffic controllers after an incident unfolded at EWR Airport Saturday evening.

The flight landed at EWR at approximately 5:21 p.m. after traveling from Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.

“United 1837, we’re declaring a state of emergency, it seems like someone just attacked one of our flight attendants,” one of the pilots said from audio captured by the ATC app.

“Can you have emergency vehicles come meet the aircraft out here?” the pilot requested.

“Do you have a nature of emergency?” the air traffic controller asked.

“A gentleman just attacked one of the flight attendants and tried to open the forward main cabin door,” the pilot responded.

“Oh my God,” the air traffic controller shockingly replied.

Another pilot aboard the aircraft said that the flight was requesting to be sent to a gate “ASAP” and to be met by law enforcement there.
